Private Influence in the Public Sector
You dont have to take my word for it, but I think Avandia, GlaxoSmithKlines popular diabetes drug, is just one more case of corporate influence over government. For eight of the eleven years the drug has been on the market, the FDA has required that the drug be accompanied by written warnings, either to doctors or consumers, stating the heightened risk of severe health problems such as heart attack and stroke that are caused by the drug. While no class action lawsuits have been filed to date, Avandia lawyers have filed an estimated 13,000 individual law suits. Between the huge number of lawsuits and the clear evidence that the drug is harmful, its hard to see why the FDA has not recalled the drug. I smell private interest exerting power over this case.
